Darts – ‘Mighty Mike’ stuns Anderson in Newcastle

World number one Michael van Gerwen is hoping he sent out a message to his Premier League Darts rivals by beating reigning champion Gary Anderson 7-3 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

PDC World Champion Anderson missed last week’s curtain-raiser in Leeds because of illness and only had the lead once – the opening leg – against a determined van Gerwen, who closed out the match with a 111.88 average and bounced back from his defeat to James Wade on the opening night.
“Last week I was a bit poor but this was a good performance and I played well tonight,” ‘Mighty Mike’ told reporters. “It’s especially nice against Gary, he’s the World Champion and it’s the number one and two in the world so they’re always big battles.”
He continued: “I played a fantastic game and I hope that I carry on playing like this for the rest of the season. I finished well at the right moments, my doubles were there and my scoring was there so it was a good night for me.”
Wade had to play twice in Newcastle because of an illness picked up by Robert Thornton and opened the card with a 7-4 win over Michael Smith but was later thumped 7-1 by rival Phil Taylor.
Peter Wright made it two wins on the spin with a 7-5 victory against Raymond van Barneveld and two-time world champion Adrian Lewis also continued his 100 per cent start to the tournament with a 7-4 success over Dave Chisnall.
The Premier League continues next Thursday at The 3Arena in Dublin and van Gerwen is currently priced 6/5 by Bet365 in the outright winner betting.
