Tennis – Duo ruled out of Brisbane action

Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep have suffered pre-Australian Open injury setbacks by pulling out of the Brisbane International.

Sharapova has been forced to withdraw from the warm-up tournament for the first Grand Slam of the year due to an arm problem, while Halep has pulled out because of an injury to her left leg.
Russian ace Sharapova, the defending champion in Brisbane and the 2008 Australian Open champion, admitted that she was disappointed to miss the action in Queensland, saying: “I hurt my forearm in practice a couple of days ago.”
Meanwhile, Halep, 7/1 with Bet365 to win the Australian Open title, played down fears that her injury could hurt her chances in Melbourne later this month, adding: “I thought that it’s more important to be ready and to take a break.
“It’s nothing dangerous. I did an MRI and it’s nothing dangerous, but it’s still an inflammation. I have just to take a few days’ rest.”
