Soccer – Defoe crucial to Sunderland hopes

Manager Sam Allardyce has backed striker Jermain Defoe to score the goals to keep Sunderland in the Premier League this season, with the Black Cats 4/11 with Bet365 to be relegated.

Former England frontman Defoe netted a hat-trick as the Black Cats won 4-2 at Swansea City to move to within one point of their victims and, therefore, within one point of safety.
He had also scored twice in a 3-1 home win over Aston Villa, with two consecutive league wins having reignited the Wearsiders’ hopes of beating the drop come the end of the season.
And Allardyce is in no doubt that Defoe will be crucial to his side in the coming months, saying: “When you look at the two frontmen at Watford and the two frontmen at Leicester, those two score all the goals.
“We’ve got Jermain scoring all our goals, so at the moment we’ve only got one, but one will be enough if he continues to score like he does. He can change a game in your favour by giving him one chance and him scoring.”
